The Black 5 is a 4-6-0 locomotive based on Don Young's accurate interpretation of the works drawings for the LMS Stanier Class 5 as designed by William Stanier. It has two outside Cylinders of 1.625" bore, and 6.375" driving wheels. The length over loco and tender is 67" and the locomotive weighs around 75kg.

Don young wrote a detailed construction series with a complete set of reduced drawings in his magazine Locomotives Large and Small starting the series in issue number 44, August 1990 and ending in issue 56, August 1993. The drawings and description include the Stephenson's valve-gear option.

Drawings and castings are available from Reeves 2000. Castings alone are available from Blackgates Engineering.

Modelworks produced a kit of the Black 5 in 5" gauge.
